Island of Procida
Types of transfer › Fast transferThe just four square kilometer island is home to famous and brave sailors, whose fleet was based here and known as the most important of the Mediterranean. This tradition is still preserved in the prestigious state maritime school "Istituto Nautico Francesco Caracciolo”. All three ports of Procida - Marina di Santo Cattolico (main port), La Chiaiolella (Marina) and La Corricella (fishing port) - are natural harbors that were initially crater lakes. The volcanic origin of the island is also attested by the yellow tuff. The brightly painted houses seem to be a Nativity Scene, which is dominated by the mighty fortress of Terra Murata. This fortress was together with the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo (Patron saint of the island) refuge during the frequent raids by Saracens and pirates. Both the fort and the church were built by the Bishop Innico d'Avalos. In 1830 the fortress was transformed by the Bourbons in a prison that has closed its doors forever only in 1989. The first church of San Michele Arcangelo was built in the ninth century by Benedictine monks. Today in the Abbey are interesting paintings by Luca Giordano, master of Neapolitan painting, the wooden coffered ceiling, a statue of the Archangel Michael in gold and silver, and a common grave in the underground vault. Particular attention is paid every year to the typical Good Friday procession at which attend a large part of the island population.
