It was founded by the Samnites between the 8th and 7th century BC and was originally called "Maleventum" (bad wind), until the Romans conquered the region in 275 BC and renamed it "Benevento" (good wind). At the time of the Roman emperors the city was an important road junction: here met the Via Appia, the Via Latina, the Via Egnatia and later the Via Traiano. Today one can admire very well preserved buildings from Roman times, such as the Arch of Trajan and the amphitheater. In the 6th century AD Benevento became a duchy of the Lombards, of this period are preserved the Tower of the Chain ("Torre della Catena") and the church of Santa Sofia. From 11th Century the region was under the protection of the pope and thus could defend it against the occupation by the Normans. The Museo del Sannio, which is housed in the Rocca dei Rettori, a fortress built in 1321, provides a good overview of the turbulent history of the city. The entire area has been repeatedly plagued by violent earthquakes, in addition, many important buildings were destroyed by bombs in World War II, including the Cathedral of Benevento built in 780 by the Lombards. To the pagan customs of the Lombards, before their Christianization between 671 and 687, can be attributed the name of the very famous liqueur “Strega” (witch).
