The island of Ischia is divided into six municipalities: Barano d'Ischia, Casamicciola Terme, Forio, Ischia, Lacco Ameno and Serrara Fontana. Every town has its own traditions, its own history and above all its own attractions. Highlights in Barano d'Ischia are the popular Maronti beach, which occupies the southern coast of the island and the Nitrodi source, a mineral spring, which was already known to the Greeks. Casamicciola Terme, today an important ferry and yacht harbor, was famous for her spas already by the mid-nineteenth century. Lacco Ameno, for decades meeting place for the international jet set, is the historical center of the island: here the Greeks founded in the 8th Century BC the first colony in the western Mediterranean with the name Pithaecusa. Forio, the second largest city of the island, occupies the entire west coast and has the famous beaches of Citara and San Francesco; in the Middle Ages it was popular destination of the Saracens, what can still be seen in a few towers, like the Torrione in the city center. Serrara Fontana, the small agricultural community in the south of the island, is the starting point for hikes to the summit of Mount Epomeo; but also it belongs to her the famous village of Sant'Angelo. Ischia, also called Ischia Porto, is the largest city, with its Old Town, Ischia Ponte, and the mighty Castello Aragonese, it was for centuries historical and economic center of the island.
A single break on the "Green Island" is usually insufficient to discover it all, especially when besides sightseeing you also want to visit the famous thermal parks as: the Poseidon Gardens in Forio, the Castiglione Gardens in Casamicciola, the Negombo Garden in Lacco Ameno, the Tropical Garden and the Aphrodite-Apollo Gardens in Sant'Angelo.
